My research, teaching and personal life
Life after a PhD
Jul 20th
The 20th of May 2011 was the big day: the PhD viva day! I was extremely nervous, but it was a good type of nervousness, one of the kinds that make you sharper and heightens your senses; trying to preempt any kind of questions that you might get and generally be on top of things. It was great! and the feelings you are left with when all is finished: joy, happiness, but at the same time sadness, the regret that everything is over, that you will not be a student again, that this was the last time you were under examination, your last exam ever!
A PhD degree: a great achievement, something that gives you a lot of pride. And after a successful viva, after the enthusiasm of completing a PhD fades, what next?
During my PhD years I heard times and times again from other academics that a PhD degree is just the beginning. The beginning of a lifetime of more research, more reading, more writing, and hopefully more publishing. Yes, it is just the beginning but what can be more exciting then new beginnings
So the work begins: more papers to write and publish, more conferences to attend, more knowledge to gain…

Well, here I am again, after a long absence from my blog.
It has been incredibly busy and posting on my blog, I have to admit, was the last thing I had in mind lately. Happy events occured in 2010 and a post on here, writing about them, it was long overdue. So here it is:
2010 was a very busy but productive year that ended with the completion and submission of my second PhD thesis. Phewwww, it was hard work but also very rewarding to see the end result of it! And I must say, I am very proud that I managed to meet the deadline, having that things in my personal life were very hectic as well.
To give you a sense of what it was like, I was having labour contractions and, at the same time, making revisions on my thesis! Yes, that’s right, labour contractions! 2010 was also the year when we welcomed into this world our wee boy Ryan Christopher Yallop. He was very anxious to meet us too and arrived two weeks earlier than his due date, on the 7th of October. That messed up my plans of submitting the thesis by mid October so that had to be delayed. However, after a period of adjustment to motherhood (man, it was hard!!! No one tells you how hard are the first two months) I finally managed to submit the thesis just before Christmas. Hooraaaay!!
So here I am today, enjoying a lovely boy (oh, the joy he brings us everyday!) and awaiting the defence of my thesis…yeap, still waiting, who would have thought is going to take so long??
But in the meantime, this waiting allowed me to have a lovely time with my family. My brother and his family visited us from Canada in March and we had a great three weeks holiday in the North and South Island.
Ok, I’d better go now and feed a screaming baby :))))) the joy……. :))))
Bye for now!
Happy New Year 2010!

It has been awhile since I added a post here. To give you an update on the ANZMAC conference, it went very well, my paper was well received and I have been approached for a potential future research collaboration with a team of researchers from Europe, USA and Australia. Which is great, as international collaborations are hard to come by…
After a long process of recovery with a long cold and a very annoying cough, I started the year feeling very stressed thinking of the huge task I have in front of me: to wrap up my thesis in the next months….which is easier said that done :) Nevertheless, I am hoping 2010 will be a year full of achievements and success in both the professional and personal life….it sure has to be, as I have great plans for 2010! Fingers crossed everything will come my way….
Here’s wishing everyone a Happy New Year with good health and happiness!!!

The ANZMAC conference in Melbourne :-)
Nov 24th
Time is ticking away and I need to get my presentation slides ready for the ANZMAC (Australian & New Zealand Marketing Association Conference) for next Monday (30 Nov)…..I’ve been asked to submit them by tomorrow so I need to get it done TODAY!
But the joy of going to Melbourne…ohhhh, I am so happy. It will be so good to meet other academics and marketing professionals and enjoy a good chat with intelligent, ambitious people.
And then the joy of visiting Melbourne for the first time. I have already planned few things to do while there, just hoping I will have enough time for everything
Will HAVE to find time! A bit of time just for myself
After all, I deserve it!
Xmas is getting close!
Nov 18th
Now that teaching is finished for this year, I cannot but wonder where did this year go?
It sure feels like just yesterday we were celebrating Xmas, and just in six weeks time we will celebrate Xmas again!!!
This puts pressure on me to do a lot of writing till the end of this year and I feel the panic; it is so much to do! But I am no quitter and it will be done!
Very anxious to visit Melbourne for the ANZMAC conference soon, at the end of this month and then can’t wait to take a couple of days of well-deserved time off in Wellington. So bye for now and get out there and do your Xmas shopping
