Life after a PhD
Jul 20th
The 20th of May 2011 was the big day: the PhD viva day! I was extremely nervous, but it was a good type of nervousness, one of the kinds that make you sharper and heightens your senses; trying to preempt any kind of questions that you might get and generally be on top of things. It was great! and the feelings you are left with when all is finished: joy, happiness, but at the same time sadness, the regret that everything is over, that you will not be a student again, that this was the last time you were under examination, your last exam ever!
A PhD degree: a great achievement, something that gives you a lot of pride. And after a successful viva, after the enthusiasm of completing a PhD fades, what next?
During my PhD years I heard times and times again from other academics that a PhD degree is just the beginning. The beginning of a lifetime of more research, more reading, more writing, and hopefully more publishing. Yes, it is just the beginning but what can be more exciting then new beginnings
So the work begins: more papers to write and publish, more conferences to attend, more knowledge to gain…
